What I’ve been up to in February

I thought it would be fun to do a little review of what I’ve been up to every month. These little updates will touch on what I’ve been doing from a photography and business perspective but they will also contain what I’ve been up to outside of all that.

First up, at the beginning of the month I was delighted to receive a Gold award in the Travel category from the Society of Wedding & Portrait Photographers for a photograph I took while in New York. Sweet! Gold awards are difficult to achieve, last year I only managed this for a single image so it’s a great start to the year! Here’s the photo, it was taken in Grand Central Terminal on the night before Thanksgiving so it was chock-a-block.

Carrauntoohil Climb

Carrauntoohill Climb PhotographyThe cross above marks the summit of Carrauntoohil, Ireland’s highest mountain. On Saturday morning a gang of us set off from Cronin’s Yard at the base of the mountain with this cross as our destination. Our spirits were high and so were the clouds surrounding the mountains! Undeterred we ventured on making our way up through Hags Glen.

Time for a change

Kevin Murphy PhotographyMy nephew is working on filling out his CAO form this week. It’s hard to believe that it’s 15 years since I was flicking through college prospectuses (prospecti?) trying to narrow down my choice. I liked art, but I wasn’t very good at it. There were people in my art class that were incredibly talented – without even thinking about it they could sketch portraits that were amazing. I was in awe. In the end I figured that it would be difficult to earn a living through art at the best of times, never mind when I was up against such gifted artists.

I decided to

Portrait Photography LimerickThe ancient library was also the setting for a shoot with Catherine. I wanted to use the setting to create a conceptual image. I sketched out an idea which was a cross between Harry Potter and Alice In Wonderland. Some preparation, a bit of luck and a pinch of processing gave me the image above. I’m very happy with how it turned out. Here are a few more of my favourites
